Archaeologists, Astrologists

Astrologists practice an ancient art;
Archaeologists unearth it.
One changes the topography of the land,
The other alters the landscape of the mind.

Both understand the gist of geometry—
Archaeologists see it in the curves of arches;
Astrologists see it in the angles of stars.
Both keep logs; lists of their discoveries.

Archaeologists reassemble broken artifacts,
Creating replicas to show us what has been.
Astrologists break down behavior into symbols,
Revealing patterns to show us what might be.

Both ask questions and challenge what we know about ourselves.
The findings of each are open to interpretation.

Astrologists have predicted the destinies of monarchs.
Archaeologists have discovered the fates of civilizations.
Each has known honor—

But both have suffered contempt by skeptics.
Astrologists are denounced by sciences
Which will not consider what they cannot quantify.
Archaeologists are denied by religions
When findings don't align with dogma.

Archaeologists.  Astrologists.
One looks in the earth, understanding
What they find there is evidence of who we were,
Who we are, and who we may become—
The other looks to the sky, understanding
The same thing.
