O fairy tale princess,
Lying in shadowed silences—
Do you dream of sunrises
As red as your spindle-pricked finger?
Do memories call to you
Like the forlorn song of mourning doves
Heard faintly beyond your nightmares?
Do you run lost through labyrinthine
woodlands,
Choked off by briars of protection
That long ago became a prison?
O unkissed bride,
Hidden beneath your veil of cobwebs—
Will you ever wake to know
The world never stopped for you?
That your life slipped by
As you dreamed it away;
Always asleep even when you were awake?
O lovely pawn,
Awaiting rescue from this restless sleep—
Did you never notice you were led?
You only believed you lived
As you wandered through stone corridors
Of days others planned for you,
Treading spiral stairways
Till you reached the foretold end, the tower;
falling
Into forgetfulness as fate’s spinning wheel
Took away the choices
You never thought to make for yourself.
